Lauren Miller

Lauren Miller, Novelist Famke_Janssen-1-Turn_the_River

GENERAL INFORMATION
Nicknames: Laurie
Age in 2013: 28
Date of Birth: (starting date is May, 2013) 01/27/1985
Gender: Female
Occupation: Novelist

APPEARANCE
Portrayer: Famke Janssen

Lauren’s wavy brown hair can be a bit unruly at times. Generally she keeps it restrained back in a somewhat sloppy bun where the shorter locks manage to slip free but when down her hair tends to hit just past her shoulders. She had dark brown eyes and occasionally uses rectangular plastic framed black glasses if she’s going to be reading for hours on end although she can see well enough without them. She stands at around 5’5” tall. Years of running long distance and biking has left her with an athletic build. She has one noteworthy scar in the form of a long line along her right shoulder blade from a misfire incident involving her younger brother and a rifle.

PERSONALITY

Lauren is the type of person who can take a second and relax at times but generally prefers to be productive. This results in her spending most of her time writing for hours on end or searching for inspiration when she’s not running or biking or out with her few friends if she by some miracle happens to be in town. Between these habits, her preference to stay in and watch a movie or read or write rather than hit up some crowded club, and her periodic sabbaticals where she prefers to completely cut herself off from the outside world in order to revitalize her Muse and her lack of involvement with her family, most people believe that she’s a complete recluse.

While considered a nice polite person and friendly enough by most who know her, she has a sarcastic streak which can get her in trouble at times and almost got her fried from her prior job on a few occasions. There’s the matter of talking to herself too… when stressed or frustrated, she has a habit of talking the matter over with herself often times getting very odd looks from anyone who happens to be in the vicinity.

She’s wanted a dog since she went off to college since her family has owned them ever since she could remember, but hasn’t bothered given that her sabbaticals don’t tend to be very accommodating. She’s been known to enjoy a glass of wine from time to time. Gross things don’t tend to bother her too much, short of creepy crawly things crawling on her without her permission but that goes without saying, however there is one thing she just can’t tolerate… house centipedes. She’s never been a fan of very tight very dark places either or places where you wind up unable to move due to the shear number and proximity of people. She hasn't exactly had the best history with guns either and generally hates the sight of them... especially rifles.

HISTORY
Father: Dave Miller
Mother: Elizabeth Lane
Spouse: N/A
Siblings: John Miller, younger brother, 23, joined the army straight out of high school
Other:
A good amount of information relating to your character's history: their childhood, their pre-apocalyptic life, career, etc.

Relatively short after Daniel and Elizabeth were married and settled down in a quaint little home in South Carolina, Lauren was born. This caused a bit of an uproar on Elizabeth’s side of the family (until her parents caved since they wanted to see their grandchildren) and still results in glares and whispers during the holidays. About four years after Lauren was born, John came into the world and it was Dave who wound up quitting his job as a car salesman to stay at home and raise the kids and the pair of Labrador retrievers he’d had since before the children were born while Elizabeth continued her career as a doctor. This allowed John to pursue his hobbies which tended to revolve around two main things… guns and writing.

Lauren and John were primarily raised by their father given their mother’s busy schedule. Both kids were pushed by their father to play sports which resulted in Lauren jumping from softball which was too dull to tennis which she didn’t quite have the hand eye coordination for and finally to cross country. She fell in love with the sport and has kept running and biking ever since.

In school, Lauren quickly picked up the nerd label… people who actually wrote for fun were just weird of course and her high grades didn’t help matters either. Her brother wound up heading in the entirely opposite direction and adopted her father’s love of guns and remained in the ‘popular’ crowd thanks to his jock status.

The relationship between Dave and Elizabeth began to dissolve as the kids grew up due to the stress caused by their respective families and their rather hasty marriage. The last real straw came in Lauren’s Sophomore year of high school when Dave left the key to his gun locker out when he left to go to the store. John decided that he could handle them on his own after watching his father for years and wanted to some practice. So he grabbed a rifle which was far too large for him to properly handle and went out in the backyard, the gun was in the locker afterall, it shouldn’t be loaded. Lauren stepped out into the backyard to play with the dogs when her brother pointed the weapon at her thinking it would be a fun to try scaring her. Just as he said ‘BANG’, his finger pulled down on the trigger and the weapon’s roar rang out. Fortunately for Lauren his aim was off and he wound up grazing her shoulder blade rather than putting a bullet through her chest.

After the incident, it was clear that her mother and father’s relationship was more or less over. Her father began drinking far more heavily than before and slept on a couch. They only remained together long enough for her brother to graduate and her father’s beloved guns remained in their locker. Lauren’s relationship with her brother also became strained and it took years for her to finally forgive him.

In college, the family’s deterioration took its toll on Lauren’s grades. Both of her parents called her when they needed to get steam off their chest or rant about the other before and after their divorce. Finally graduating from college by the skin of her teeth with a B. A in English , she moved across the country to Colorado (for the views) and took up work as a concierge at a ski resort while writing at night. After a few years, she’d put together her first novel and after some prodding from her friends sent it off to several publishers. Finally one picked up the book and next thing she knew, her publisher had roped her into a book tour. Her novel, Nevermore, was selling and selling well which was something Lauren never really expected. Given that the book was largely based on her situation at home accompanied by embellishment of course and twisted into a bit of a horror story, this only further cut her off from her from her family (who could pick out which of them she’d turned into monsters or made into elaborate caricatures) short of her father who remained supportive.

Lauren invested in a modest house near Seattle with her new income. It’s however been a few years since she’s written a book and her publisher is continually prodding her for another novel. So the past year she’s migrated from her Seattle home to various secluded places to revitalize her Muse. Her current interest in something more along the lines of a conspiracy theory like thriller led her to a small house… well more like a cabin really… near Area 51. She’s set to remain there several months until she can finish the rough draft of her current novel, happily cut off from society without a TV or internet or radio or phone service (she was getting sick of her publisher calling).

It was a stormy night. The wind whistled across the door of the cabin causing the door to creek eerily and the windows to rattle while branches scrapped begging to escape their torment. Outside a figure lurked in the darkness, moving through the rain towards the small abode. The glint of metal shown from high right hand as lighting zagged across the sky illuminating the world in one quick flash. The woman inside had no idea that tonight she would take her last breath, that tonight she would die all because she knew one little secret…

The scratching of the pen on paper came to a halt. The woman peering down at the words she’d just written from behind her rectangular spectacles frowned before ripping the page from her notebook in one swift snatch accented by a grunt. The blaring electronic beat reverberating in her headphones only seemed to punctuate her aggravation. “Ugh, lame, horribly lame and incredibly cliché.”

There was a toss and the ball of paper wound up sailing towards the waste basket which was already rapidly reaching its capacity. It hit the rim, rolled too far to the left and found itself rolling along the floor while the woman scowled at the indignant piece of paper. “Dad would even scold me. Audrey would shoot me... and then pick up one of those authors still using sparkly vampires to publish instead.” Her eyes rolled over to her phone as if expecting her publisher to instantly call although the battery was still removed... a precaution to keep anyone from disturbing her during her trip. Nothing killer her Muse faster than nagging publishers and she didn't want to deal with any sob stories. She needed to focus.

The woman gave a slight shudder before taking a sip of wine and glaring at the new crisp blank page. Now how to start this chapter? "Hmmmmm… hmmm... hmmmmmm.”
