Oklahoma

The Guardsmen walks over to the downed man who Daniel had shot, and empties a whole magazine into the thing's head, leaving only a pulp. The other Guardsmen gun down the other man nearby, shooting the bloodied and not-moving body more times than necessary. The surviving co-workers and paramedics have regrouped, and the National Guardsmen eye the sick carefully. "Listen sir, remain calm and follow me. I'll answer your questions later," the National Guardsmen tells Daniel. A Guardsmen sergeant listens to his radio and nods.

"Listen up people. This is what we're doing. This position is compromised, so we're calling in a chopper. All of us will proceed quickly to the roof, where a helicopter will pick us up. We will proceed with my men guarding the flank and front, with you in between. Let's go!" the sergeant yells.

The group reaches the roof after charging up several staircases, and a UH-60 Blackhawk is circling above. The chopper hovers on the roof, a soldier manning a M240H machine gun attached as a door gun. The National Guardsmen clamber aboard, helping up a few people, including Daniel. Then the chopper begins to lift off, leaving anyone who looks sick behind. The people left scream and cry for help, grasping at the chopper as it begins to lift off, the National Guardsmen watching impassively.....

Longwood, FL

The SWAT leader hides a grin poorly. "Well aren't you the law student. Well we're taking you in anyhow. My team has better things to do then listen to a bunch of kids give their story." He waves a hand and two SWAT officers lift Sam and Mila roughly to their feet. Suddenly, they hear a low moaning. The man on the stretcher slashes out, catching a paramedic across the face with his nails across the eyes, sending the woman to the ground, screaming. He flies out, attacking another paramedic savagely with hands, nails, and teeth.

The SWAT officers and National Guardsmen whirl on the scene, aiming their weapons. A National Guardsmen charges forward with a knife, and a taser, firing the taser, but the barbs and electricity do nothing. The paramedic lies unconscious and the man whirls around, shrieking with such intensity that almost everyone claps their hands over their ears. The man hurls forward, grabbing the National Guardsmen's knife and slamming it into his body multiple times. He then grabs his pistol and starts shooting wildly with one hand, dropping three SWAT officers screaming as their ears screech in pain as the man continues shrieking.

Richmond Community Hospital, VA
1:55 p.m. EST

The commanders shifted uneasily as a few Rangers began to open one of the barricades to let about twelve people through to the hospital, the MH-6 Little Bird flying around, tear gas ready. "Sir, we were planning to use tasers and close range tear gas. Fight them off. Scare them off with a few rounds into the air," Captain Coles says a little nervously.

Suddenly, they hear screaming from inside the hospital. Matthew stares inside. "Excuse me, General. I'm going to check that out." Matthew waved at five Rangers to accompany him inside, and the five immediately begin to follow, weapons out and ready.

They charge inside only to see a scene from hell. A man and woman are attacking medical staff in a hallway, one with a scalpel. "Everyone down!" Matthew shouts, firing with his M4 at the one with the scalpel, aiming at the central body mass. He sees the thing spin and go down, and he waves his Rangers forward, attempting to maneuver in a shot without injuring any people in the way. The woman finishes attacking a bloodied nurse and charges the Rangers, who open fire with all they have. One has an M249 who fires full auto, while the rest fire in bursts with M4s. The thing is hit repeatedly and stumbles, but keeps charging forward, slamming into a Ranger who is caught off guard. The thing bites into the Ranger's face, and another Ranger kicks at the woman, only to get slammed to the ground with a two-legged kick. Another Ranger draws a tactical knife and slashes, creating a long, bloody slash across the woman's neck. The Ranger on the ground screams as the woman slashes out his eyes, and the woman stands to face the knife-wielding Ranger, a long bloody smile created on her neck. The woman attacks the Ranger savagely, slamming his head into the ground repeatedly. Matthew grabs the woman and slams her to her back, firing his M4 point blank into her face, the body thrashing. He doesn't stop until he runs out of ammunition, and what's left of the woman collapses to the ground.

Sam saw the event unfold and swore wildly; his head pounded as the screaming threatened to shatter his ear drums. Luckily a SWAT trooper backed into him and Sam felt a knife in his hands. Unthinkingly he sliced through his bonds and ran to Mila. Crouching next to her he cut her plasticuffs off too.

"The head, shoot it in the fucking head!" He tried to shout over the screaming of the thing. It had a gun now and it had killed several people. Sam grabbed Mila's arm and pulled urgently, "Run Mila! RUN NOW!"

He leaned in closer, practically shouting in her ear. "WE HAVE TO GET OUT NOW!"

As soon as shots began to rain around the room, Mila ducked behind the table and closed her eyes even though she knew a small wooden table would do nothing against semi-automatic rounds. Sam ran over in the chaos, having somehow gotten hold of a knife, and cut apart her bonds. She jumped a little at his touch, not having heard him approach, but rubbed her wrists with relief once freed.

She started to peer over the table when Sam suddenly grabbed her arm roughly and pulled her along. They made it to the foyer before Mila turned back toward the kitchen.
"Wait, where's York? York!" She whistled loudly.

The husky came bounding around the corner as bullets continued to fly, embedding themselves in tile, a piano bench, and a shattered glass cabinet.
"Good boy, York. Let's get out of here," Mila said as she opened the door, and let Sam and the dog out first. She reached to close the door behind them only to encounter a sharp pain in her upper arm, sort of like pulling a muscle. She must've shut the door harder than she meant to. No time to stop and check for bruising now though. Glass and wood shards were still flying in various directions throughout the house, the few left alive were screaming or shooting or both.

They had to get to her car. Humvee outside or not.

Wait, a humvee? Damn they came over-prepared. Leave it to America.

Behind them, about three National Guardsmen and three SWAT officers charge outside the house as the Apache zooms forward, launching Hydra 70 rockets and AGM-114 Hellfire missiles at the house. The gunner fires 30mm explosive rounds from the M230 chain gun. The man is just following the six soldiers when the house explodes, and the man is highlighted against the flames for a few seconds in the doorway before the house blows apart. The six soldiers go flying from the shock wave, and the shock wave also throws York, Mila, and Sam into the side of the Humvee. In the distance, they hear screeching and foosteps, a lot of them, approaching.

"Get down!" Mike shouted to the doctor and shoved him to take cover, luckily the woman and man had both turned their attention to the Rangers that had barged in and not to the two unarmed civilians that they were previously staring down. From Mike's point of view he saw the whole violent affair and in his mind, time seemed slowed to show each detail. Mike got that way sometimes, when he saw something that was vitally important though usually it was for his documentary. In this case it was survival and he watched with frightened attention he watched the gruesome encounter. He watched bullets tear through the beast but did nothing, he watched as a knife slit its throat and it did nothing, and he watched the creature ferocity as it attacked the rangers.

By the time it was over, only a few seconds had passed but it seemed so much longer. Mike felt like puking as the last of the Ranger officer from before's clip go into the thing's skull. He didn't know what to think as the creature gave its final twitches, what was it? It was almost unstoppable and felt no pain, and that thought scared Mike. Bullets did nothing and with man's prodigal child of military science being the gun, what did that mean?

Suddenly a thought struck him, he got out from under cover, telling the doctor to keep down. Nearby a sidearm had fallen, a simple beretta from one of the ranger's hands. Mike had no idea how to use one of those hefty assault rifles and from the firefight he saw it did no good. Holding back the vomit and the shock of what had just happened he called out," Hey, that other one might still be alive!"

Sam felt the Humvee impact with his back and struggled with breathing. The impact made it feel like his back was out of alignment.

None the less adrenaline came to the front. It had saved him before, it would save him again. Sam assisted Mila to stand, opened a passenger door to the humvee and pushed her towards it. Running round to the driver's side he opened the door and also leapt inside. He started the engine and looked around him. The thing was BIG. Still it had a automatic and so it would make his life a lot easier. He hoped.

"I hate not having a third pedal," he shouted as he resisted the urge to hit the accelerator and thus let the Humvee make a breakaway from the house. "Feels like I lost a leg."

"Come on SWAT guys. Come on."

Daniel numbly complied with what the guardsman had told him. He followed behind him through the building and up the stairway his eyes trained on the back of the man. He wasn't about to question orders from an armed man. Besides these people were here to help them.....weren't they?

As they exited onto the roof, despite all that had happened, a thrill of excitement ran through Daniel. He had never ridden in a helicopter before and even though these weren't the best circumstances he was eager to do so. He followed the man up on the chopper when it was his turn his eyes soaking in the details darting back and forth in the cabin. The amazement continued until he realized how few were on board even as the helicopter rose from the roof leaving screaming people behind many of them friends.

Daniel moved towards the door quickly and yelled over the wind at the guardsman with his hand across the door.

"What are you doing? You just can't leave them there! Surely you can help them...take them to a hospital or something. You saw those things. They don't stand a chance!"

The guardsman remained silent so Daniel clasped his upper arm looking to gain his attention.

"I'm talking to you. What the hell do you think you're doing? You're supposed to help people!"

York jumped into Mila's lap as soon as she was settled into the passenger side of the Humvee. She shut the door hastily and then looked back at what was left of her childhood home. There was a ton of rubble and smoldering flower bushes, but that was about it. Slowly, the surviving SWAT members started to get up from where they had landed, rubbing backs and tenderly touching blast wounds. Now that the dust had settled, the only sounds were caused by the Apache's rotors and the sickeningly-familiar screeching closing in behind the vehicle.

Mila glanced out at the sideview mirror and her eyes widened. Several beings just like the one whose face she had mangled were now gaining quickly.

"Oh shit!" one of the National Guardsmen yells, and helps one of his buddies to his feet and rushes over to the Humvee. He shoots Sam a glance in the driver's seat, but climbs into the Humvee's turret, where there is a mounted minigun. The SWAT officers get up and hobble over to the Humvee, getting inside and angling their weapons out the windows along with the the two other National Guardsmen, one who is one the radio.

"Longwood 2-1, we have confirmed a reading of three dozen enemy foot-mobiles. Two A-10s will initiate close air-to-ground air support in five minutes. Standby."

The minigun starts to fire, and hot shells fly everywhere as the bullets rip into the crowd of zombies heading towards them. The minigun cuts swathes, but they keep coming in droves.

Oklahoma

"They are infected. They are the enemy now," the National Guardsman says, brushing Daniel away. "They will be those creatures in a matter of hours. It's happening all over, man. You're lucky. We're getting you to a LZ so you can fly up to a military secure zone being set up in D.C. Now sit down and strap in."

The rest of the survivors have shakingly strapped themselves in. All around them, they see other choppers, fighter jets, bombers, and even a few civilian aircraft.

Richmond Community Hospital, VA
2:02 p.m. PST

Matt looks up at a man hefting a pistol, yelling that the other one might still be alive. Matthew shakes his head. "It's gone, bro. I emptied half a clip into it." He kneels beside his moaning Rangers, and a few medical personnel crawl out of hiding to help him. There are grievous wounds. One's eyes are bleeding horribly and his eyes are badly scratched. The other is unable to get up because of dislocated ankles, and another's head is bleeding from being smashed into the floor, and he definitely has some kind of brain damage.

Matt helps lift his men onto stretchers and runs along with them to be put into surgery, then slowly walks back out, running as he realizes that if one could take the beating he and his men had inflicted on it, the other could still be alive. He reloads his rifle, feeling sick and that he might be too late.

Daniel sat down hesitantly. Strapping in he looked around at the unsure faces of the people around him. He looked at his cellphone again and the no signal sign hoping his wife and child were alright. He had no way of finding out and the thought of them hurt by one of those things made him anxious with worry.

Daniel's first helicopter ride wasn't going as well as he had hoped. He rung his hands and put his cell phone back into his pocket. Daniel looked towards the nearest guardsman as the helicopter jostled slightly.

"My wife and boy are in Claremore. What about them? Do you know anything about that area? Is the same thing going on there?"

The questions again tumbled from his mouth his anxiety making them rapid fire.

Red Dawn-The Beginning - Page 4 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Red Dawn-The Beginning   Red Dawn-The Beginning - Page 4 EmptyFri Jun 04, 2010 3:37 am

Oklahoma
1:05 p.m. CT

The Guardsman looks up from listening to the radio, the chopper rocking heavily. "It's everywhere, though they have good chances. Lot of National Guard units all over the city. They should be evacuated to Tennessee or to Washington D.C. If you want, you can stay at the base in Tennessee and see if they can come through," he says sympathetically.

Washington D.C.
2:05 EST

President Jonathon Roth watched, amazed, at the military hardware being eschewed all around the National Mall and all over the city. Tanks were lined up in strategic positions. Barricades were being erected in the streets. Soldiers manned checkpoints. And a large bunker was being hastily constructed while citizens huddled in the now empty Metro tunnels below. This was a safepoint. A bunker against all that was happening. The situation had gone from being an "emergency" to apocalyptic. All over, reports of strange mutations were rolling in, and large hordes of seemingly crazed infected were running wild, destroying and killing. Countries were falling apart. The virus was spreading too fast. Jonathon had just given the order to recall all military units to eight strategically placed hardpoints all over the country. One in California, one in Utah, one in Arizona, one in Tennessee, one in Iowa, one in Maine, one in Washington, and one in Washington D.C. All military units were to be recalled there and engage any pockets of the "Wreakers," (which they had been frequently dubbed by military units over the radio), and evacuate as many civilians as possible as the military attempted to organize every unit possible. Meanwhile, a vaccine was being hastily constructed.

A VH-60 Helicopter slowly descended on the White House lawn, and a squad of U.S. Rangers charged forward, dropping into ranks as Jonathon stepped forward. "Marine Two is on the ground, over," Jonathon's head Secret Service agent, Tim Hawkins, radioed in. Vice President Nathan Gillaway jumped off the helicopter, followed by a man that could be mistaken for the president except for his cold expression. Jonathon wordlessly hugged Nathan, then hugged the other man. "Kevin. Glad you got out." Kevin Roth gave a slight nod, and a few more Secret Service agents stepped off the helicopter as the group left the area. The chopper rose into the air and flew over to a temporary air field nearby to refuel.

"Kevin, as you've been told, we need you working on this virus. You're the best. We have a fully equipped lab and staff set up nearby." Kevin nodded again. "Alright. I'll do what I can."

Daniel nodded.

"Thanks. Whatever will put me closer to my kid is fine."

They made it out fine. Sure they did. You have to believe that. Daniel thought to himself as he looked out the window at the expanse of land that passed swiftly below him. Any other time he would be thrilled to be up here. Now all he could do is worry about his friends and family. The virus was bad enough when it was killing people but this...this whatever it was struck him as far worse. He wasn't a praying man but right now he could almost consider any avenues available.

Even with all the worry and stress going through his mind he felt completely exhausted. He hadn't slept the night before, they were having money problems as usual, and the extra stress of the day weighed heavily on him. Before he had known it he drifted off to sleep his head nodding onto the cool metal of the helicopter wall beside him.

**********************

The door to his home was hanging open a trail of blood leading inside. He walked slowly, like walking through syrup, and looked around him as he entered the living room. It was in shambles. Things overturned and deep gashes all over the wall. Daniel knew something was wrong but what he wasn't sure. Then he heard his boy crying. He began to run though as he did the hallway seemed to elongate itself and he appeared to be going nowhere. Finally after what seemed an eternity of running whilst his boy's cry became more urgent and shrill he reached his son Logan's room. Laying on his mother crying and soaked in her blood Logan looked up.

"Daddy the monsters are here. They made momma go to sleep. She has ouchies all over." Daniel's legs trembled and almost buckled. He fell forward to grasp her hand tears welling in his eyes. Daniel had no time to grieve though as an inhuman wailing assaulted him and out of the darkness of the closet one of those things fell on his son tearing and rending. His son in pieces the thing looked up and it's mouth opened impossibly long and wide and screamed and then spoke in a odd croaking tone.

"You can't save them. You can't save anyone. Everyone is dead."

**************

Daniel awoke to his own screams in a cold sweat, tears streaming down his face. Slowly reality sunk back in and realizing where he was he felt slightly ashamed but still couldn't stop himself gulping down air like a man just emerged from water drowning.

Sam looked out of the rear mirror and swore as the sound of the minigun threatened to shatter his ear drums. "Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit," his hand slammed the gear stick into drive and his foot went down heavily on the throttle. The big humvee pulled away as fast as it possibly could, which felt nowhere near fast enough to Sam.

"Where do I go, where the hell do I go?" He tried to manouvere the overweight vehicle down the tight streets and back onto main roads where he could open up the throttle properly. "This is nuts!"

Oklahoma
1:10 p.m. CT

The other passengers glance at Daniel uneasily at his screaming, tears, and raspy breath. The National Guardsmen slaps him on the back sympathetically. "It's alright man. It was just a dream."

The chopper approaches a large base set up on the edge of Oklahoma City's outskirts. All sorts of military aircraft were flying in and out, and a whole line of M3A3 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles, M1 Abrams Main Battle Tanks, and Humvees were just exiting the base. Hastily erected concrete walls were still drying. Inside, there is an airfield with a few dozen aircraft resting there, and a barracks and parking space. There is also a runway for airplanes outside of the walls, and a refugee camp set up in the middle of it. The chopper sets down and several National Guardsmen greet the passengers and start leading them to the refugee camp, which is a few barracks with a few hundred people sitting around, waiting for flights out of the area. More Humvees and a steady line of cars were entering the base for a chance to leave.

Longwood, FL
2:10 p.m. EST

"Listen kid! Stop driving so fast! We can take all of us to a military extraction point, alright? There's an LZ nearby, and we called in close air support on that horde of Wreakers! But we have to laser designate the target! So stop driving so fast, just keep enough distance in between!" a big headed Sergeant yells. However, even as he says that, at least ten Wreakers reach the Humvee even though it is going maximum speed, and begin jumping on the Humvee. The gunner slices five in half, and the Guardsmen and SWAT officers inside try to shoot the remainder off. Three are killed, and the remaining two jump off and stop moving until the rest of the horde moves up next to them. "Holy shit, are they using tactics?" a SWAT officer yelps. "How the fuck are the running 70 miles per hour?"

United States
2:10 p.m. EST

Abruptly, emergency messages over the radio change. They now instruct civilians to head towards any military personnel they find for access to a military extraction point. They are to comply with military personnel. They will be escorted to military safe zones. They are instructed to avoid public areas and stay at home, barricade any entrances, and let none but military personnel in. They will be taken to a military base where they have the option of staying at their base or taking military flights elsewhere. All within the bases must receive the temporary vaccine and wear masks at all times. Those who are sick will be taken to quarantine zones away from the healthy.

"You're fucking with me!" Sam shouted over the gunfire as he desperately tried to keep the Humvee in a straight line. "There's more than one of those things? They have names? AND YOU WERE GOING TO FUCKING ARREST HER FOR TRYING TO STOP ONE FROM KILLING ME?!"

A wreaker had appeared ahead of him and Sam swung round it, gritting his teeth as the wheels screeched. It's like driving a pregnant cow.

"Where are the planes then? WHERE'S THE FUCKING LZ?!" Sam continued to shake uncontrollably as the Humvee screamed its heart out.

Mila was hunched closer to the driver's side of the Humvee and clutching York's neck like he was a lifesaver in a stormy sea. As the vehicle swerved to avoid colliding with one of the hideous things trying to open it like a giant lunchbox, she was tossed to the other side and hit her arm against the door, coming face to face with yet another so-called "wreaker".

"AHH!!" she screamed as it put a bloody hand to the window only to be thrown from the door when Sam made another hairpin turn. "Next time, just run the damn thing over!"

Finally, they started to even out and be able to drive straighter as Sam had found a larger road with less congestion thanks to advice from one of the National Guardsmen who had been communicating with the Apache.

Smacking into the door had reminded Mila of the pain she'd felt earlier and as her eyes began to trace the length of her arm, she made a pitiful groan.
"Oh shit..."

Most of her arm was coated in blood which had flowed steadily from an unattended shrapnel wound ever since leaving the house. The cut wasn't very deep, but its jagged edges leaked more sticky crimson every time she moved. She felt sick to her stomach and a little dizzy. She hadn't noticed it before, but York's fur was slightly matted with the blood that had made it to her wrist and fingers.

"How far until we get to where we're going?" she asked weakly, looking pale. She was trying not to vomit. And of course now she felt the sting of the wound more than before as the adrenaline began to be replaced by realization.

"I don't want to run it over! What if it smashes into the windscreen?" Sam continued to keep his eyes on the open road, looking for any sign of helicopters.

"Where the hell is this place?" Sam said glancing back at the soldiers, "Where the hell am I....Mila. You're bleeding."

There was a awkward pause from Sam before he suddenly remembered he was driving and snapped his head back round; just in time to swerve around another obstacle.

"Can someone do something for her please?!"

One of the National Guardsman gives Mila and Sam a glance, but analyzes Mila's arm. He grits his teeth. "This is gonna hurt." He yanks hard, and pulls out a jagged piece of metal from Mila's arm, the opened wound spilling blood everywhere. The National Guardsman gives Mila a shot of morphine and then wraps a pressure bandage on it.

The Sergeant from before starts to give Sam directions. "Calm down son. Turn right the next exit. The LZ is about fifteen minutes away. The Wreakers start gaining ground as the Humvee begins to run desperately low on gasoline. The minigun gunner is firing with his M4, trying to conserve rounds and let the minigun cool off. As they drive under an underpass, dozens of infected jump down, landing on the Humvee with loud thumps. The minigun gunner's feet disappear, and they see him being savagely torn apart by the Wreakers. The National Guardsmen try to redirect their fire, but the weight of the Wreakers is making the Humvee swerve.

The Apache comes around and begins firing its last rockets to hold off the horde, and the gunner begins a constant barrage from his M230 chaingun.

"This is Flight Element Thunderbolt-5, we have a visual on your location. We need you to laser designate your target," the radio reports. The panicked Guardsmen who treated Mila opens the window and tries to aim his rifle out the door, with the laser designator attached, when a Wreaker grabs his arm and wrenches. The man screams and starts firing, blowing the Wreaker off the Humvee. The Guardsmen pulls his arm back inside, but it is torn apart badly. He gasps and hands Mila the laser pointer. "Shine it at the horde behind us! Do it!" He fires an M9 with one hand, keeping the Wreakers closest to Mila's window away as he puts himself in danger by leaning out the window, exposing most of his body. The Apache moves off as well to give room for the A-10 Warthogs, and the horde advances even more without harassment......

Mila bit down hard on the thumbnail of her other hand as the Guardsman removed the piece of what was once a door hinge. The shot of morphine was unexpected, but started to take the edge off almost immediately. Suddenly things didn't seem so bad. "Thanks," she said as she leaned her head back onto the seat and tried to relax a bit.

When several wreakers thudded onto the roof, she was jarred from her momentary space-out just in time to notice the sound of gunshots from above had ceased. The transport began to rock so much that Sam seemed to be struggling just to keep it from veering off onto the rumble strip.

Mila hunched down into her seat amid the clawing of wreakers at her window and the screams of the man behind her. Suddenly, a laser pointer was shoved into her face and she turned around. The Guardsman who had just moments ago treated her wound now had one that quite rivaled it.

"Me? Oh, hell," she muttered, blinking a few times as she looked at the instrument and then out the window at the mass of screaming and racing bodies behind her.

"Point and shoot. Just point and shoot. It can't be that hard," she told herself while she tried to make her exposure area as small as possible in order to avoid getting her head clawed off. The soldier behind her was keeping the majority of swipes away from her face, and bodies toppled to the concrete whenever he got a good shot in, but she knew she had to do this fast if she was going to do it at all.

Poking her head out just enough to see behind them, she lined up a shot with the laser and hit the switch to activate it, sticking her tongue out of the side of her mouth in concentration.
"Okay, any time you guys want to bring the rain would be great," she yelled to the man holding a radio to his ear in the middle of the backseat. Her hair continuously whipped into her eyes and made it difficult to focus; a fact that would have been less annoying had she not already been seeing things blurrily from the morphine shot.

She cringed as bullets flew past her from the Guardsman's M9, worried that one of them might go through her skull if the Humvee swayed any worse of if a wreaker were to grab ahold of the man's arm.

Sam gripped the wheel like a man possessed. Keep it straight, keep it straight.

His arms shook with the effort of gripping the steering wheel. "We're about to drop a bombs on our head. We're actually dead."

"Yeah well don't blame me for double tapping one of these fuckers, 'bro" Mike responded. Moving over to the proned body of the second one, he kicked it make sure it wouldn't move. Not even a twitch. For a moment he thought of using the gun but thought better of it, he didn't want to scare anyone not to mention he might actually need those bullets for something more important. Just then it suddenly occurred to him how serious this was. In his reporting, all across the country he had heard reports of cases. Just a case of the flu they said, would pass easily but the amount of people sick. What was the number?! Mike couldn't remember but knew it was big, he wasn't sure how big but big enough to cause a lot of trouble if all of them were like this one. Hopefully they don't run, I can't run for crap... he thought.

Bringing his foot up he brought it down hard on the creatures neck. It did nothing again, another stomp and Mike heard a satisfying snap as something in the vertebrae shattered. A third time made sure it was completely paralyzed and dead, for a moment he thought about destroying the brain but did that actually work with these things? He knew the zombie movies, he loved them as a teenager and for the longest time he joked that they were real. Now though, he was starting to wish he remembered more about those survival tips they gave about surviving zombie apocolypses.

Well, the best thing to do was stay away from conflict. He had been thinking about joining these military guys but Mike wasn't exactly the most trusting the government, perhaps that was paranoia again but it was also rational thinking. They were going to fight and Mike wanted to live, the best way to live was not get into a fight. Then again.... Mike sighed, frowning he looked around. Going back to the doctor he said," It's okay doc... but I think we need to take a look around in case something else decides to jump in unexpectedly."

Richmond Community Hospital, VA
2:16 p.m. EST

The doctor stares at Michael numbly, his hand bloody as he stares at a wound in his chest. He's shacking and gasps, but only makes a weak wheezing noise. "I.....I think I'm hurt."

Meanwhile, Matthew runs through the hall, reaching the hallway where the fight recently took place just as the "dead" body begins to twitch and stand up. Matthew snarls, kicks the creature to the ground, and shoves his M4 into its face as he pulls the trigger in bursts, splattering the brains and blood all over the floor. The thing twitches and at one point the hands try to shove the gun away, and Matthew hacks them off with his combat knife, where they lay twitching on the ground. When the thing stops moving, Matthew steps away and reloads his weapon, flicking the safety on.

A few people get out from hiding, and Matt steps outside again, grimly reporting the situation to his commanding officers as the remaining Rangers inside clean up the mess. Matt is glad to see people slowly entering the hospital, though over the radio the orders ring out that all military units should evacuate any un-sick civilians. Also, that five Blackhawks are inbound to pick up people at the hospital.

Longwood, FL
2:16 p.m. EST

"Copy that, we see your designation. Firing for effect," the radio says in confirmation. The A-10s roar overhead, launching bombs and firing a few missiles and rounds from their cannons. The overpass explodes as a few stray explosives hit it, and the horde behind disappears behind a sheet of flame. The explosion knocks the Humvee forward, tipping it a little, and everyone's hearing goes out before returning in ringing. People hit the front of their seats, and a few do not move after others wake up, as they are unconscious.

The overpass is smoldering behind an enormous fire, and they hear screeching of infected as they burn. The Apache circles, but is not firing at anything, so they have to assume the bombing was effective.

Sam felt the world go light, the humvee lose all grip and go into a slide. He didn't even fight the steering wheel, instead choose to brace himself as best as possible. In the end he needn't have bothered as the vehicle came to a complete stop, sending people rolling all over. Several lay unconscious in the vehicle but Sam did not pay attention to them: instead he listened to the noise of the wreakers.

"Th-they're still alive. They can feel it. Oh my god......"

He engaged the humvee's drive and simply headed for the next exit. He was shaking so badly it took him a while to realise the vibration was coming from the vehicle's wheel and not from himself.

"Fuck. Fuck! Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck! Those fucking things are in my fucking country and I can't get fucking home because they're worried about fucking spreading it. It's already fucking spread! They're all dead. Fucking dead!" Sam snarled and began to punch the wheel with his hand, "Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!"

They were off the interstate now, following the Apache which was taking a slow route back to the LZ. "Nothing. I've got nothing left. Nothing!"

Lucky for Mila, she had managed to pull herself back inside before the explosions propelled the Humvee forward. The vehicle was thrown off of its back wheels for a moment and she would have slammed her head into the dashboard had it not been for York's furry body in between. Although she smushed him a little as they were thrown together, it only knocked the wind out of the canine, and they both recovered quickly. A few of the remaining soldiers, however, blacked out for a moment after their faces made contact with the front seats.

Even after taking such a beating, the military vehicle continued to chug along like it was designed to. Still, they were definitely running out of gas quickly. Mila doubted they could make it to the LZ on their current tank. Walking was beginning to look like an option they might not be able to avoid.

Except for the fact that Sam and Mila were now the only ones left both alive and conscious.

The rant coming from the driver's seat caused Mila to look over at Sam with pity.
"You don't know that. We're alive so far; there's a good chance that other people survived too, even there. You'll get home eventually," she said, wanting to believe the words were true for herself as well. The truth was that she doubted just as much as he did that there was anything left worth going back for. She'd seen her family home destroyed in a matter of seconds. Who was to say that the kid's whole town wasn't in the same state?

Still, she hated to be discouraging, so she kept those thoughts to herself and focused instead on trying to make him feel better.

"God dammit doc, I told you to stay down!" Mike shouted, placing the gun down on a nearby counter, he got down to help the man. "Stay awake here doc, I don't know what I'm doing and I need you to walk me through this!" He knew the basics really, pressure, bandages, disinfectant if the wound looks bad but beyond that he was lost and this was a doctor.

He wasn't in any shape to patch himself up but Mike was there to help.
