"Jesus, when it rains here it rains....." Sam stared out the windscreen and tried to make out things in the distance. He couldn't see anything. Trying to not be disturbed he lent back in his seat and thought of other things.

"Is it a crowded area where your mum lives? Or relatively quiet?"

"It's a decently quiet suburb but it still gets some traffic. Still, shouldn't be too much going on I hope."

The drive was slower going than it normally would have been, especially since Mila usually sped everywhere by at least five miles per hour over the limit. There were very few cars along the route she took, but there were the occasional set of headlights, usually going in the opposite direction, toward Orlando. Perhaps some people thought they'd manage to get a flight somewhere. Where the heck they would want to go right now was beyond Mila, however. She doubted anywhere else in the country was doing any better, and Europe was already well-known to be currently screwed over.

Finally, somehow, they made it through the storm and the streets to pull into a short driveway in front of a white house. Freshly-bloomed flowers dotted dripping hedges that lined the little walk to the door. Mila couldn't see any lights from the front window, but it was still light outside so the lights might not have needed to be on anyway.

As she shut off the car's engine and locked the doors, Mila could hear a familiar barking coming from behind the front door. The sound was welcome, but she was still worried.

Keys still in hand, she flipped through a few of them and then stuck one with a blue ribbon on it into the lock. It opened easily, and the two were met by a pair of bright blue eyes and a very happy looking Siberian Husky.
"Hey, York," Mila said, rubbing the dog's head affectionately. "Where's Mom?"

She knew the dog couldn't answer her, but she still spoke to it as if it understood her.

"Mom? Dan? Mike?"

Before Mike could reply, he had to duck in to allow a pair of medical personnel go by carrying boxes of vials and other medical supplies. Mike smirked and jerked a thumb at the pair as they went by," Yeah, I can tell you're pretty busy so I'll keep it short. My name is Michael Burkes.. err, you might recall me as 'the scumbag who cried wolf' earlier in another documentary I made. We had an appointment for an interview for a follow up of that documentary but after seeing what's been going on here... well my interview is the least of more worries." He gave a nervous laugh and sutck both hands in his pocket, stepping into the office he went on," Doctor... my only question will be this:

Should we be worried?"

Red Dawn-The Beginning - Page 3 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Red Dawn-The Beginning   Red Dawn-The Beginning - Page 3 EmptyTue Jun 01, 2010 10:55 pm

The rest of the journey went in silence as Mila concentrated on not driving into a tree and Sam began to drift into a another world.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was raining in this other world too, not as heavily as back in Florida but continuously in a dreary way. The sky was grey and the ground looked sodden but that did not distract Sam: He had a bag to pack. With a patience unbecoming of his unkempt appearance he folded his clothes neatly and placed them in his backpack. It was filling up quickly.

"What you doing?"

Sam didn't even look up at the speaker, simply moving a few books round to create more space in his bag. "You're really serious about this, aren't you Sam?"

This time Sam paused. "Well, yeah. You were with me when I started booking flights. You saw how I spent that money getting ready. Why did you think I wouldn't be going?"

"I just couldn't imagine you actually going through with it. You always-"

"Chicken out?"

His sister frowned at his back as he calmly continued to pack his bag, "Well yeah. Not always I suppose: You did go to those protests. And you even made that speech."

"I didn't make the speech Lucy; I wrote it. Someone else spoke it." He finally turned round to face her and shrugged, "You know I find it difficult to speak sometimes."

"Yeah, but you wrote the words. Surely that matters most?"

Sam gave a quick laugh and kicked away a book he had no room for,
"You're such a English student, you know that?"

Lucy smiled at him in that strange lopsided way of hers; it made her look like some super happy maniac. Sometimes Sam didn't doubt the maniac part much. "Seriously Sam, do you have to go? What are you going to do?"

Sam shrugged slightly, unsure of what he was feeling.
"Just to see other places really Lucy. Talk to a few people. Plus in some places I'll get to help out a lot."

"Get yourself killed too." Sam raised a eyebrow at her questioningly, "Don't shit me Sam. I can tell what you're thinking. Ever since mum went you've been smoking that shit like it's the very air you breathe. Then the way you were so eager to head for Kenya after you saw the riots on TV. What kind of traveller are you? What's the journey about?"

Sam stayed silent for a while but Lucy waited patiently. It was normally a good sign that he was just thinking things over, rather than shutting down completely. "I'm not aiming to kill myself Lucy. I wouldn't do that to you. But I just need to get out of here, breathe some different air. See some different people. Do something, you know?"

"Yeah, I know. But Sam I'm doing something. I'm going to learn, going to do a degree I enjoy, meet new people, find a place where people can accept me and Susy being together-"

Sam held up his hand and cut her off, "That's a different kind of something Lucy. I'm not looking to do something physical in the world, I'm looking at doing something within myself. I just have to go, but no more talk about it. Read my blog instead."

Lucy simply shook her head and sighed, "You socialists are all nuts."

Sam shrugged and turned round, beginning to pack his bag again. Suddenly he felt himself being hugged tightly. "Lucy, you know I don't like being touched.""Shut up you twat and let me hug you."

Eventually she let go. "I better go get Dad."

"He's still at the surgery? Christ. He's thrown himself into that place like there's no tomorrow."

"Well, with you and me buggering off to alternate places it's all that keeps him sane."

"He's still nuts."

"Who isn't in our family Sam?"

Sam nodded simply, "True."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The car came to a stop and Sam jumped out of his reverie, bringing himself back to reality with a bump. Stepping out of the car he picked up his bag and bat and let Mila lock the car doors before following her slowly behind. This whole place is too quiet, but every suburban part of the US feels like that.

Mila unlocked the door and let herself in, searching for her family. Unsure of himself Sam plonked himself down in the doorway and began to roll a spliff, making it a relatively large one. The dog was staring at him. "Hey dog."

It didn't say hello back. Shrugging to himself Sam lit his spliff and took a slow drag, trying to relax. "This is nuts man. This whole thing is nuts."

For a moment he could of swore he heard a shout or scream in the distance but it cut off abruptly. Unsure of the noise Sam picked up the baseball bat and began to swing it around slowly to reassure himself. In less than an hour I've befriended a girl I'd probably never have talked to in a normal state, taken her up on her offer of shelter and basically forced my way into her life. This isn't really me, is it?

Red Dawn-The Beginning - Page 3 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Red Dawn-The Beginning   Red Dawn-The Beginning - Page 3 EmptyTue Jun 01, 2010 11:35 pm

The house was cluttered, not at all like her mother usually left the place. It looked like things had been dug through hastily. Mila went around the corner and opened the garage door: her mom's car was still parked there.

A sick feeling twitched through her stomach, but she pushed it away, though she couldn't keep herself from thinking of the blood-stained road from earlier. Her heart started pounding as she checked her family's bedrooms. No one was there, and the rooms looked more or less like the rest of the house with things strewn about haphazardly.

York followed her where she went, whining slightly. Apparently he had heard something that Mila didn't, because he kept checking the window in the kitchen. Mila looked outside but didn't see anything, so she guessed he must have seen a squirrel or something. York loved chasing squirrels.

On the table, a note was scribbled in her little brother's handwriting. She took a deep breath and picked it up, scanning it quickly.

Mi,
We went to Ben's house when we heard the news. Tried calling you. Will keep trying. We love you.
-Mike

Letting out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding in, Mila sat the note back on the counter. What was her brother talking about? What news had they heard that made them need to go to her mother's boyfriend?

"Well, they're not here, apparently. I guess my mom's boyfriend must've picked them up. I really hope they didn't head for the hospital though. There's no way I'm venturing out there right now. Guess we'll have to chill here for a little while. I'll put on the news, provided they haven't been completely taken over like the radio."

Mila picked up a remote and turned on the television, then walked over to the living room computer and turned it on as well. Hopefully the internet was still up. Her mother's cable provider had a history of crapping out at the worst times.

Sam stood up on the porch and began to sway slightly. He didn't smile, rather tried to keep a straight face. It was time to start thinking seriously again. Even if he felt high as a kite.

Withholding the urge to giggle he put out the spliff and put it in his pocket, ready to finish it later. He swaggered into the room and sat himself down, pulling his netbook out of his bag. Flicking it on he started to search for a wireless network he could access.

"Um, it's a nice house. Thanks for bringing me here, I appreciate it." He stared at his netbook as it made the work of starting up a real slog so he ignored it for a while, withdrawing his Zombie Survival Guide. He flicked through it listlessly, feeling a bit defeated by the lack of useful information. It was however made for Zombie attacks, not illness.

"Hey, you don't have a gun in this house, right?" Sam looked around awkwardly, "I know it might sound like a strange question but those things cause more trouble than they're worth. Scare the hell out of me too."

Red Dawn-The Beginning - Page 3 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Red Dawn-The Beginning   Red Dawn-The Beginning - Page 3 EmptyWed Jun 02, 2010 3:44 am

Longwood, Florida
Roric Residence
1:40 p.m. EST

A rerun of the president's earlier speech plays on the news, followed by footage of a fight at the Richmond Community Hospital in Virginia. Just as Sam asks his question they hear a clunk, and York the dog begins to shimper. They hear a moaning that begins to get more and more highpitched, and outside in the rain in the backyard they see an outline of a person stumbling around. Through the glass, the person looks a deathly gray, and their clothes and hair are slicked down by the rain, but it looks male. His eyes are bloodshot so much that they look bloody, and he stumbles as if heavily drunk, the moaning becoming inhuman shrieking.

Outside Richmond Community Hospital, VA
1:40 p.m. EST

Captain Coles, Matthew, a SWAT chief, and a National Guard Captain all run up, saluting the general. "Sir, glad to have you here. We're currently holding the mob off, but they're being unreasonable. More like animals, sir. Not human. Not allowing us to treat them anyhow. We were thinking of calling in some tranquilizers or sleep gas or something. We think the virus might be affecting their judgment," Captain Coles says, giving a brief sitrep.

The crowd is still a moving mass of flesh, only held back by conservative tear gas strikes.

Inside Richmond Community Hospital, VA
1:40 p.m. EST

The doctor gives a weak grin. "Professionally, I'm supposed to tell you to remain calm and the president and his administration can handle this. Unprofessionally, I'd say look outside and that'll tell you everything. This isn't just happening here. It's everywhere."

Suddenly, they hear a nurse scream and a highpitched shrieking noise, followed by a low moaning and then more screams. The doctor pales and rushes down the hall, before running back, as a woman stumbles forward, eyes bloody and blood pouring out of her nose, ears, and mouth. Her skin is gray, and she shambles if drunk, shrieking and clawing at her body, which is turning a deathly gray. Further down the hall, they hear another scream and then a spray of blood flies, covering a wall and another person leaps forward, though their eyes are a dark color and the blood is dry. Their skin is the color of a corpse's, but its eyes are mad, and it's hands, clutching a bloody scalpel, are twisted into claws. More medical personnel flee, shouting and screaming in fear at the sight.

In a flash of lightning, Mila nearly jumped out of her skin as screaming from the hospital footage became surround sound. Her T.V. didn't have surround sound...

"OH SHIT, WHAT THE FUCK!?!?" she yelled as she toppled and fell ungracefully from her chair at the computer desk. A surge of fear hit her like stabbing knives to the chest, and for a moment she didn't know what to do. York had finally stopped whimpering and had started barking instead, but it only added to Mila's sense of surrealism in the moment.

"You idiot," she thought to herself. "You left the shovel in the car and now there's a maniac tripping through the gate!"

She started to crawl backwards slowly, wishing for the courage to get up and run back towards the front door, but her body was stiff with shock at how such a sound could possibly be made by a person.

It's like a dream...

Step. The doorway got closer.

This whole thing, it's not real.

Step. He was on the porch.

It can't be real. This doesn't happen in real life.

Step. The rain began to fall on Sam's head.

But if it is real......christ I wish I hadn't touched that shit.

Sam squinted at the sick man as his glasses began to steam up. He gripped the baseball bat slightly harder. The way the man was screaming he wanted to hit him now. But Sam was English. Which meant he had to do things his way.

"Excuse me sir, are you alright?"

"SAM! C'mon!" Mila shouted as her counterpart moved past the "safe" zone of glass and wood that made up the double doors to the porch. She had stopped moving backwards but certainly wasn't moving any closer to the crazy guy either.

"He opened the door. Oh shitfuck, why did he open the door? First the store looter and now this. He's gonna get us both killed," were the words running through her head.

She managed to stagger to her feet, but as soon as her feet found contact with solid ground, they seemed to have a mind of their own. And their mind had decided to stay put.

York, on the other hand, dashed outside next to Sam and crouched down, growling with teeth bared. The screaming was so high of a pitch now that Mila didn't doubt it to be hurting her dog's sensitive ears.

"It's alright Mila, we need to help this guy. He's just an innocent-"

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Sam spun on his heel and saw it charging at him. "Look, I'll help you but you need to cal-oofff!"

The creature had charged forward and grabbed Sam, scratching at him. It tried to drag him closer but Sam had the baseball bat inbetween them, acting as a shield and he pushed the creature away with it. "Look, you! You can j-just f-fuck off right now! Back off man!"

It charged at him again, again he managed to push it back using the baseball bat. "Look, if you go for me again I'll use this thing! I s-swear!"

It charged. Panicking Sam swung and caught the thing's legs, sending it sprawling.

"Jesus, I didn't mean to hit you so hard. Are you al-"

AAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

It was on it's feet already and making good headway for him. "I-I have a right to defend myself you know! I've been in riot zones, I know how to use one of these things!"

The creature ignored him and charged. Sam swore and just managed to duck out the way, swinging the bat hard. Don't go for the head, you could kill someone. Go for the back, send them sprawling down. That's what the nice riot man told his colleagues. The bat connected with the creature's back heavily and it went down. Sam stepped back and relaxed a little. Nobody tended to get up from that kind of hit; he'd seen that first hand.

"Fucking hell. What a cunt! I-I can't believe I just hit someone with a bat..." Sam leaned forward and sighed, trying to relax. The rain continued to pound down. "Did you see the way he-oh what the fuck!"

The creature stood up easily, looked at him and charged. He went over, bat still in hand; the creature tried to bite his neck as he lay sprawled on the floor but Sam shoved the bat into the thing's mouth as it clawed on top of him. "Get it off me, get it off me!"

"Oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck," Mila thought frantically as she looked around the room for something she could use to help Sam. York was already tearing at the man's clothes and shoes, trying to pull him off. Somehow, even with the bat in its mouth, the thing was still screaming in its shrill voice.

"Sorry Mom," she said to the air as she yanked a tall lamp out of the socket. It was a bit more unwieldy than her shovel, but it'd have to do.

Flinging the second door aside, Mila held the lamp above her head and stepped into the rain as well.

With a scream of her own, she swung downward, the lamp's cone connecting with the monster's skull in a nasty half-crack, half-squish sound. Blood sprayed in several directions, coating wet grass, stepping stones, fur, and clothing alike.

Still, she had seen the thing get up twice now, and didn't want to risk it doing so again. Kicking at its caved-in cranium, Mila continued to bash at its face now that it had rolled off of Sam, tears welling in her eyes. It had long stopped screaming, probably due to the fact that its neck was twisted at an odd angle from Mila's repeated blows, but now it didn't even have much of a recognizable face to scream from.

The dented lamp dripped with brain matter, blood, and rain drops as Mila stood there, staring wide-eyed at what she had done. A moment later it clattered to the ground and she walked further down the porch without a word, stopping at the edge of the deck with her back to Sam. York came over and nudged her leg, but she didn't move other than a slight tremble.

Sam got up slowly, his hands shaking. He looked at the corpse of the thing. About now a hero would come up with some cool quip; some clever pun on the state of the thing or the thing's death. Sam vomited instead.

He stood on his hands and knees for a little while, letting the rain clean the vomit from his mouth. "Thanks Mila. Thank you. He was trying to kill me; we both know that."

He stood again and held his bat tightly, approaching Mila slowly. She was shaking although whether it was from being cold or from the situation Sam could not tell. "Hey, we need to get out of here. Whatever the hell is going on we don't want to be around for."

He took another step closer; "Mila.....what do you want to do?"

At first, Mila said nothing, her eyelids closed as rain slid down her face. Then she reached up and brushed at her face, clearing the excess water that had gathered in her eyes while simultaneously adding a smudge of blood to her cheek. She was trying to decide if turning around was a good idea.

Somehow she had avoided puking the first time, probably because all she had eaten that day were a few bites of sandwich. But if she saw its mangled parts a second time, especially after hearing Sam's barfing, she wasn't sure she could keep herself from doing the same. Finally, she decided that speaking wouldn't upset her stomach, so she did so by only turning slightly, keeping her eyes on the wood beneath her feet.

"Where should we go? Obviously everything's gone to shit," she said in a much quieter tone than usual. All she could think of was how her brothers would do in a situation like the one she had just experienced. Undoubtedly things of this nature were happening all over.

"Somewhere rural," Sam said glancing at the body. "If you know anywhere we can get too that isn't surrounded by human beings that'd be the best place to get too. If the sickness is driving people to that level of insanity we need to be away from people."

He sighed slightly and tried rolling the body away with his foot. It was a delicate job and he did well not to throw up again. It took an awful lot of work just to roll it slowly, prodding it with his toe, out of the way to of the path to the door.

"I'm going to go inside and grab my stuff, alright? You'll probably want to get some things too." Sam walked into the house slowly and looked at the bat. The teeth marks were so deep he could quite clearly see a jaw line. It's a titanium bat, good gods.

Mila felt numb as she followed him inside, careful to avoid looking at the corpse as much as possible. Even so, just before she passed over the threshold, she couldn't help but turn back for a moment and look at the puddle of bloody mud gathering around the gray-skinned thing. With a shudder, she continued inside, snapping her fingers to summon York inside as well.

The dog followed obediently, but posted himself by the doors as Mila locked them, pressing his nose to the glass and tilting his head to listen. Now that Mila's shivering genuinely was from being cold, she moved down the hall to her old bedroom and went into the closet, searching for something to change into. She had taken most of her clothes to college, so all that was left of her wardrobe were a few small shirts and some old cargo pants that actually were big on her since she had lost some weight. In her brother’s room, she had better luck.

A pair of his old boots fit her feet fairly well, and he had a simple belt to help with the pants issue.
“Hey Sam, if you want to change clothes, you can use some of my brother’s stuff. He’s about the same size as you I think.”

She took off her blood-spattered name tag and stuffed it into her work pants, then changed into a tank top in the bathroom and brushed her hair. It was starting to frizz like it always did when it got rained on. Stupid hair.

Sam nodded his thanks dumbly and walked into the room. As he sat down he realised he was still gripping the baseball bat. He let it drop, trying to ignore the guilt of the small bloodstain the bat had just made in the carpet. He pulled some clothes and struggled into them, pleased with how well they fit. He'd have to pay Mila back somehow for this.

With what Sam, useless money? Meaningless thanks?

Grumbling slightly to himself he pulled his sodden hat back on he picked up his baseball bat and headed downstairs. As he walked downstairs he looked inside his bag. Slowly he withdrew the bag of weed and stared at it. What you trying to do Sam, kill yourself? You haven't stopped smoking that shit. Snarling slightly Sam took the bag and walked out of the door, before throwing it as far as he possibly could. It landed somewhere with a dull splat. He smiled a bizzare smile and headed back inside, content with what he had done. For now.

He took the bat to the raingutter and used the water in there to clean it. Wherever they went he had the feeling he needed it.

"Mila? I'm ready when you are."

Suddenly, Sam and Mila hear a loud sound of a helicopter approaching. Then they hear loud screeching and a Humvee and a SWAT van stop outside the door. A SWAT team and about six National Guardsmen charge forward, the SWAT team producing a battering ram and smashing the door in. "ON THE GROUND! EVERYONE ON THE GROUND! HANDS BEHIND YOUR HEAD!" someone yells with a bullhorn. The soldiers line up and aim their weapons, and one charges Sam, attempting to knock him to the ground and hold him down while a comrade waits to try to put plasticuffs on him. Three men charge upstairs to find Mila, yelling for her to get on the ground or they will shoot.

Hearing the commotion, Mila peered out of her bedroom door only to be confronted by the barrel of an M4. After she screamed in shock, a disembodied voice boomed at her to get on the ground and put her hands on her head. As strange as it seemed, she was actually more scared now than she had been when the crazy man on her back porch attacked.

Of course, this wasn't the first time she'd had law enforcement weapons trained on her, but that was just a mistake involving airsoft guns and nightvision.

Dropping to her knees, Mila immediately placed her hands on her head, cringing as if they would shoot her just for looking at them. As she cowered, she felt like such a coward, but the tears that had sprung back into her eyes only made the feeling stronger.

She hoped Sam was complying. She wasn't sure how things went down in England, but she imagined that the rules of survival in this sort of situation were more or less universal.

They have the big guns and armor, you have nothing but flesh and fists. Do as they say or die.

They had the automatic "I win" button. Simple.

Longwood, FL
Roric Residence
1:52 p.m. EST

A SWAT officer cuffs Mila with a strand of plastic, and two men clear the rest of the house. "There's a body down here! Lot of blood!" a man calls out, and Mila is led downstairs and sat at her table with Sam. A middle-aged SWAT team leader sits across from them, taking off his night-vision goggles. "You two like to tell me why you murdered this man?" he asks, as an ambulance arrives and the body is prepped for removal. Overhead, an AH-64 Apache gunship flies around, searching for something.

OOC: Sorry MailOrder, forgot about you for some reason. XD

Oklahoma
12:52 p.m. CT

The doors open and a team of paramedics rush in. They immediately begin taking out syringes and begin giving everyone a shot of vaccine. Then a National Guard team rushes in after, watching the employees as a few paramedics hoist the dead body onto a stretcher and carry it out, and a few more cover the blood and gore with a sheet. Suddenly, one of the more sicker employees starts coughing uncontrollaby, and blood begins pouring out of his mouth. He thrashes on the ground, his skin turning a gray pallor. Another sick employee's eyes begin to bleed and he starts screaming inhumanely. The paramedics rush over and pull out medical instruments, trying in vain to stop the bleeding of both people. The National Guardsmen raise their weapons slightly, and everyone else backs away from the two.

Suddenly, the thrashing man stops, growing still as a widening pull of blood spreads around him. The man with the bleeding eyes starts thrashing as well. Several paramedics produce a defibrillator and starts trying to revive the seemingly dead man. Suddenly, after a few shocks, the man on the ground snarls and tackles one of the paramedics, flinging the life defibrillator paddles into another's face, who screams. The other man stops thrashing and lies there, his blood intermingling with the others. The attacking man is deathly gray, and his eyes are bloodshot and his hands twisted into claws. One of the National Guardsmen attempts to tase the man, but the barbs and electricity seem to have no effect as the man charges the soldier, knocking him to the ground and stabbing him with a medical instrument. The National Guardsmen open fire, and the bullets rip into the attacking man and slam him to the ground, blood and tissue flying everywhere. The man shrieks but stands back up, leaping with inhuman strength and force at a soldier, swinging the sharp medical instrument.

The other man also stands up from the ground, and snarls, setting upon the stunned employees and paramedics.

At first Daniel doesn't even seem to process what is going on. He just sits there dumbly staring ahead at what's going on. The crazed man leaps at the guard and he's shredded with bullets and then impossibly gets to his feet leaping at a guardsman and taking him down. What the fuck are these things? When did I end up in a damn horror movie? he thought to himself and hearing the screams of his coworkers as the other sets on them he stumbles to his feet meaning to run but finds himself unable to do so.

The awful wailing of the people behind him, friends and co-workers, makes him turn. Not thinking he grabs a pistol dropped by the guardsman now being torn apart by the "thing". Daniel takes a deep breath.

Just like Call of Duty he tells himself lining up the gun. Not firing a single shot in his life the first shot flies far wide of the thing on top of the guardsman alerting it to his presence. The second and third also fail as the thing lunges toward him.

As the thing closed the distance it became almost impossible to miss and cringing from the loud sound and the shock to his hands as the gun kicked the next four bullets hit the thing in the head and neck and it crumples to the ground. He began to congratulate himself before realizing that the guardsmen probably did much more to the thing than he did.

Okay, not so much like Call of Duty. he remands himself before snapping out of his internal dialogue to realize he had just killed somebody. Sickness or not a brother, father or son lay at his feet it's dying nerve impulses still twitching certain parts of it's body thanks to him. Suddenly looking at the firearm much differently it clatters to the ground discarded as he looks at it almost in disgust before looking up to the nearest guardsman.

"What the hell is going on here? What are those things?" He said one question quickly following the other.

Mila watched the squad congregating on the porch and began to sob. "He...he... was sick. He started screaming, and...and then he started to run at him even though he was just trying to make sure he was alright, and he was clawing and yelling and biting and he was gonna kill him! It was self defense!"

All of her words came out way too fast and she took in a gulp of air when she'd finished, shaking as she looked from the officer to the other men in the unit.

"ON THE GROUND!"

What the-

Sam was sent sprawling as a SWAT member tackled him to the ground, his wrist immediately cuffed with plastic binders. Self preservation took over rapidly; he'd read about this kind of shit."I'm unarmed, I'm unarmed!"

He was picked up and placed at a table with Mila opposite him. She explained first and began to break down. Sam meanwhile operated on some faraway plane; admittedly this wasn't the first time law enforcement officials had tackled him with guns. At least this time he could speak their language.

"He continuously assaulted me with what I believed was intent to kill despite verbal warnings from me. I struck two procautionary blows with a baseball bat but he refused to back down and even seemed to shrug the blows off. He attempted to bite at my jugular and scratched me quite severely." He nodded at Mila simply, "I believe without her intervention I would be dead."

He shook his head simply and stared at the officer, "It was not murder. Mila did not intend to kill him. She wished to protect me: I understand your laws are quite strong on self defense."

Mike wasn't sure how to respond. Technically he was expecting the usually cookie cutter answer of not to panic. Then again this situation was hugely different compared to... just about anything else. Michael wasn't foreign to bad situations; he was a war correspondent in the Middle East, he had been in violent riot zones, ghettos where dead bodies were a common scene, and even in a Mexican prison. Nothing seemed to compare to this.

Mike opened his mouth to speak but instead a scream was heard; not from him. Jerking his head to look back into the hallway he half expected to see more armed men attempting to break into the hospital but that was a case. Turning around to look at the doctor he instead saw a man whos fears where just realized. He went pale and rushed out, with Mike close behind. What he saw was not a woman. It was as if something from his nightmares had stepped out into reality, a plague of undeath. The woman's bloodshot eyes met Michael's gaze for an instant and forced him to look away. He didn't see a pleading woman in those eyes, but an animal looking at prey.

No, he was panicking, that was all. Nearby more screams were heard from fleeing medical personnel; another zombielike figure appears. This one though had a bloody scalpel clutched in its pale bloodied hands. Mike gulped and looked around for something to defend himself with. Logic said it was just a disease getting into them and that they should be pitied. Still his instincts screamed at him to defend himself, to find something to keep these things at bay.

Touching the doctor's arm he said," Get back, doctor, I think the situation definitely warrants worry." For a moment he thought of reasoning with them but he didn't think that wouldn't do anything except make him look like he died a fool.

Major General Alexander Daniels

Richmond Community Hospital, Richmond, VA
Early Afternoon

Major General Daniels perfunctorily returned the salutes of the three officers and SWAT commander. Usually, it might have been viewed as improper for a civilian (the local SWAT team commander) to salute a military officer, but now was no time to get bogged down in formalities. He was about to ask what the situation was when he received the brief, but thorough in its own way, report from the Ranger captain.

Glancing out towards the ever growing crowds beyond the makeshift barricade made Alexander nervous and he shivered slightly at the thought of what might happen if something went wrong. After all, he had never seen combat and, although he did not consider himself a coward by any means, he also knew when he was heavily outnumbered and this looked like a giant mess waiting to happen. Hell, it was already a mess. One of the Rangers injured, several civilians dead and other wounded and the crowd just seemed to be growing by the minute.

For the time being, the Major General hefted his assault rifle over the shoulder so that hang by he strap and both hands would be free. Turning to the SWAT chief, he said, "I assume you're in charge here, Chief," he said respectfully, as though confirming a fact which he assumed was the case, "I hope my presence does not cause any problems, but with Richmond being so close to Washington, the Joint Staff wanted me to see what preparations were being made here to deal with the pandemic, but it seems like things are moving too fast," he sighed and shook his head, worried about this whole thing. Supposedly, things were even worse in other areas--oh yes, he had seen some of the reports--and the President was basically declaring pseudo-martial law throughout the country to stem an ever growing crisis.

"I don't like the look of this crowd," he made a motion encompassing the mob that was fanned out from the hospital outward. There was something not right about some of them--a lot of them in fact--some of them looked ashen and drawn, even from behind the barricade, Alexander noticed this oddity, "What are our plans if they should try to breach this barricade?" he was looking at the SWAT Chief, but Alexander's tone suggested the question was addressed to all four men facing him. This was a whole new ballgame.
